The Game called Life
Have you played Snakes and ladders?
It is my perfect choice for a lazy holiday afternoon. It is a game in which you will never know how it would go on, and there is no win or loss. Thinking about it, it teaches a lot about life like nothing else..
The way things pan out is based on both choice and chance. You roll the dice, which is a choice in your hands; you get a number, which is purely a chance. Even though it is the numbers that determine how far you will go, you must accept whatever you get and open your account, be it one or six. If you reject what you get and keep waiting till you get your desired number, the chances are high that you will waste a lot of time in it.
The ladders you climb and the snakes you encounter are life's way of telling you that in the giant scheme of things you are just a player. Sure, you must have rolled the dice, but you never know what is next. You might move ahead in life too quick, lucking out with the numbers and climbing up all ladders as you pass. Your numbers might mess with you and make you climb down all the snakes as you pass as well. Both scenarios are perfectly okay. Never ever assume that you will ever be on the top or will always be in the bottom.
As you keep rolling, you think you become an expert in knowing how to roll, but then, there is no playing with chance. Life has its own way of breaking your bubble of conceit and leave you deflated, but never mind, get up, dust yourself, and move on. With experience, you will learn when to play, when to pass a turn, when to wait, and when to quit.
The way you establish at your position in the game between the roll of the dice is how your retrospective outlook on life would be. Create memories at every single position you are in. While fairly on the top, it is okay to bank on your success to establish a base at your point, but always be prepared for the snakes. For if you bite more than you chew at a point of say sixty-five, and in the next roll of the dice you are down a snake to twenty-four, that will pinch hard.
When life takes you up, it is okay to celebrate. When life brings you down, it is okay to feel bad. What is not okay is to overdo both, hold on to your current position and not move on. Never mock at someone who has spiraled down a snake, or feel envious of someone who has climbed up a ladder. It is not entirely their fault. The way you conduct yourself at your highest is the way how you will be treated at your lowest.

Your friends and family will support you, but they have their own game to play. At times you may have to skip a turn for someone to catch up. Do it if the situation demands to, but then make the most out of your position. You will cross paths with many people on your way. Keep in touch with those whom you really want to. Once you are long into the game, you will learn who your friends are. You will also learn to become a friend to someone.
The person who is truly happy for your ascent even as he is descending - never let him go. Such people are hard to get.
Even if you are in a real bad position, you can make it to the top if you keep playing. This game has no victors or losers, it only rewards the players of the longest innings with the wonderful experience of an exciting life. You might be back to square one with your friends and family long gone, you can start over again, and life will still be exciting.. Like the game, Life isn't really over till you quit.
Play well, play by the rules, and just live.

Somewhere in the middle of Life, you will make mistakes too. Your actions might create some great messes, and a few great misses too. If you have skipped a turn for someone, do not expect that someone to return that favour to you. Also do not play someone else's game in order to factor your gain. You will hurt, and will be hurt too. But once you know what it is to get hurt while at your lowest, never forget that at your highest. For history repeats to those who don't learn from it.
